Before Talking about books on Tajweed , or the science of intonation in Islam, is a science by which you know how to pronounce the words of the Qur’an as pronounced by the Prophet Muhammad bin Abdullah. It is taken orally from a sheik or professor with a license to teach Tajweed. The science of Tajweed began when the Islamic state expanded in the third century of migration when errors and melody increased in the Qur’an due to the entry of many non-Arabs into Islam. The scholars of the Qur’an only began to write down the provisions and rules of intonation. It is said that the first person to compile the knowledge of intonation in a book was Imam Abu Obaid al-Qasim bin Salam in the third century AH in his book called the Book of Readings.

Ruling on taking Tajweed

Learning tajweed is an obligation of sufficiency. As for working with it, it is an individual obligation of every Muslim man and woman, as the Qur’an says.

History of Tajweed

Prophet Muhammad was keen that the Companions learn the Qur’an and master it from him, as he received it from Gabriel. Many of the Companions overwhelmed the Qur’an: Abdullah bin Masoud, Zaid bin Thabit, Abi bin Ka'b, Muadh bin Jabal and others.

And the first to lay the foundations of this science was Imam Al-Khalil bin Ahmad Al-Farahidi, and the first to write it down was Imam Abu Al-Khair Muhammad bin Al-Jazari in his book Al-Tamheed in the Science of Tajweed. The Book of Readings” extracts the rules of this science by tracing the readings of famous people from skilled readers. Then he continued research in the field of extracting other rules of intonation, and books in this science continued explaining the principles of reading and the correct method of reciting the Qur’an.

Benefit and Purpose of the science of Tajweed

The most important benefit of learning intonation is to protect the tongue from error (or what is called melody) when reciting the Qur’an. There are two types of melody in the Qur’an:

The unmistakable melody is the error that occurs in words and disturbs the intended meaning of the verse. Its example is replacing a letter in another place or changing a vowel for another, and the consensus of scholars forbids this melody.

The hidden melody is a mistake that does not change the meaning but violates the rules of intonation, such as leaving the chant or shortening the extension and others. And this melody ruled that it is hated.
